2015 Movie Review #3: Avengers - Age of Ultron
Coming off of the highly successful first Avengers, I felt there was even more hype around Age of Ultron. I can still remember lining up with the rest of the audience waiting to enter into the theatre, not something that happens very often in Hong Kong.
What was going to happen to our beloved Marvel Heroes in this edition? Ultron, a formidable foe in the comics, I wonder how he would translate over to the movies? Was an Avenger going to die? These were all questions I had going into the movie and I came out satisfied with how everything went.
Summary:
We start with a great action scene with the Avengers going over to Sokovia after finding out that Hydra was performing human tests and keeping their secrets there. What most people may not know is that Marvel's TV series are all tied to the Cinematic Universe and in Marvel: Agents of Shield, we find that they were the team responsible for finding out this hide out. I found this super cool, the way that the TV series tied into the Cinematic universe and directly making something possible too.
Its here that we first meet Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. These "Enhanced" (Definitely not Mutants...) humans are a staple in the Marvel Comics and have been a part of the Avengers there too, however we first meet these two as enemies of the Avengers, out to seek revenge on Tony Stark.
As Tony becomes more obsessed with creating a system to protect humanity against alien invasion, he starts off with a pure idea of creating an A.I. that could do this job, and this was made possible with one of the six Infinity Stones, the Mind Stone which was a part of Loki's staff he received from Thanos himself in the first Avengers.
We quickly find out that this A.I. comes to life with the efforts of Tony and Bruce Banner and very quickly learnt about the human race and its history only only to come to the conclusion that in order to achieve its purpose, world peace, was to eliminate humanity itself and start fresh.
As Ultron fights the Avengers, it leads to Sokovia being dropped from the skies which forces the Avengers to assemble and take him down. Ultimately the Avengers do prevail (spoilers?) and we get to see the new Avengers team at the end with Scarlet Witch, War Machine, Falcon and Vision as new members alongside Captain America, and Black Widow.
Movie Review:
Overall I really enjoyed this film, 9/10 would be my rating and I liked it more than the First Avengers, which I found was not with the majority of the fans.
There were many who felt Ultron's birth and turn to the "Dark Side" was too quick, he just kind of got created and then became evil which a lot of people complained about. I personally think that it made perfect sense how fast he turned, in the age of information I found it logical that an A.I. could download all and review all of the historical data and come to that conclusion.
James Spader as Ultron:
When it comes to favorite villain, Loki still takes #1 but James Spader as the voice of Ultron was a great casting, his voice is chilling, adding a bit of Raymond Reddington to Ultron, the perfect match.
Hulkbuster (Veronica)VS Hulk:
This was simply the best fight scene in the movie. With Hulk out of control, fans finally got to see the Hulkbuster in action and damn, it was worth the wait.
"Go to sleep, go to sleep, go to sleep, go to sleep......"
The Friendly Banter between the Avengers:
Perhaps the most surprising thing for me coming out of the theater was how great the conversions were between the Avengers, the humour was simply awesome, from the banter during the "Who can Lift Thor's Hammer" scene to smart remarks coming from the Vision.
"Well, I was only born yesterday..."
My Favorite Moment:
As awesome as the Hulkbuster fight was, my favorite scene of this film was Visions speech as he tried to convince the Avengers he was trustworthy and then handed Thor his Hammer. It wasn't long and it conveyed to the Avengers he can be trusted, and also added a nice comedic moment in the film to the surprise of all the heroes being able to lift the hammer none of them could earlier.
My Not-So-Favorite Moment:
My not so favorite moment came quite early in the movie and that is the scene with Quicksilver hitting Hawkeye and then remarking... "You did not see that coming?" in a fake Russian accent. I cringed a little bit when I first watched it.
